Why Your About Page Is Losing You Clients (And How to Fix It)
The About page is the second most-visited page on most service business websites. Most of them are terrible. Here's what actually converts visitors into clients.
Your About page is probably the second-most visited page on your website. People go there after landing on your homepage — they want to know if you're real, if you're credible, and if they can trust you before they call. Most About pages for Tampa Bay service businesses waste this moment completely.
The Most Common About Page Mistakes
1. It's All About You, Not Them
Counter-intuitively, the best About pages aren't primarily about the company — they're about the client's world and how the company fits into it. "We're passionate about web design" is about you. "We help Tampa Bay contractors get 3x more leads from their website" is about your client's result. Lead with the value you deliver, not your biography.
2. No Real Photo of You
A stock photo of a diverse team high-fiving in a glass office building fools nobody. People hire people, not brands — especially for local service businesses. A real photo of you (and your team, if you have one) is worth 10x any stock image for building trust. People want to see the face of the person they're about to give thousands of dollars to.
3. No Specific Credentials or Proof
"Years of experience" and "passion for excellence" are meaningless. Specific is credible. "We've built 40+ websites for Tampa Bay service businesses since 2020, with an average Google rating of 4.8 stars from our clients" is credible. Name specific clients (with permission), mention specific results, cite specific numbers.
4. No Clear Next Step
Most About pages end with nothing. No CTA, no link, no invitation to act. After you've convinced someone you're credible and trustworthy, you need to tell them what to do next. "Ready to work with us? Book a free strategy call →"
The About Page Formula That Converts
- Who you serve — "We work with Tampa Bay service businesses..."
- The problem you solve — "...who are frustrated that their website isn't generating leads..."
- How you solve it differently — "...and we solve that with a proven system that combines fast design, local SEO, and ongoing support."
- Real proof — Client names, project results, reviews, a real team photo
- Personal story — Brief, genuine, human. Why you started, what you care about.
- Clear CTA — One button pointing to contact, a call, or the free audit
We recently rewrote an About page for a Tampa Bay contractor following this formula. Their contact form submissions from the About page tripled in the following month. The content was almost the same — the structure and framing changed everything.
