The Domain Name Trap: Why Some Web Designers Hold Your Website Hostage

One of the most common horror stories in web design: a business owner who can't access their own website, domain, or hosting. Here's how to protect yourself.

The Domain Name Trap: Why Some Web Designers Hold Your Website Hostage

Every few months, a Tampa Bay business owner contacts us with the same story: they parted ways with their web designer, and now they can't access their own website. The designer owns the domain. The hosting is under the designer's account. And the designer is either unresponsive or holding the credentials ransom.

This is more common than you'd think — and it's completely preventable if you know what to ask upfront.

What You Must Own (Always)

Your Domain Name

Your domain (e.g., yourbusiness.com) should always be registered in your name, in an account you control. Recommended registrars: Cloudflare Registrar (no markup, best price), Namecheap, or Google Domains. Never let a designer register your domain under their account "for convenience." If they leave, you lose the domain.

Your Hosting Account

Your hosting should be paid for by you and accessible to you. A designer can be granted access to manage it — but the account itself should belong to your business email, with billing to your card.

Your Website Files and Database

You should have (or be able to get) a full backup of your website — all files and the database — at any time. Any professional agency will provide this without question.

Your Google Business Profile

Your GBP should be verified under your personal Google account. You can grant agencies "Manager" access — but keep "Owner" status yourself.

Your Analytics and Search Console

These should be connected to your own Google account. Agencies should be granted access as an additional user, never as the primary owner.

Questions to Ask Before Hiring Any Web Agency

  • Who will the domain be registered under, and in whose account?
  • Who holds the hosting account and pays the invoices?
  • Can I get a full website backup at any time?
  • What happens to my site if I end the relationship?
  • Do I own all the design assets, code, and content outright?
